Summary
Welcomes the holding of the first inter-committee meeting of the human rights treaty bodies, 26-28 June 2002; reiterates its request that the Secretary-General provide adequate resources in respect of each human rights treaty body; welcomes the plans of action prepared by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to enhance the resources available to all the human rights treaty bodies; reiterates that a priority of the Office of the High Commissioner should be to provide assistance to States parties; welcomes the first regional pilot workshop for dialogue on the concluding observations of the Human Rights Committee, held at Quito 27-29 Aug. 2002; encourages the human rights treaty bodies and the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to identify specific possibilities for technical assistance; welcomes the efforts to eliminate the backlog of reports on the implementation by States parties of UN instruments on human rights; recognizes the important role played by non-governmental organizations in the effective implementation of all human rights instruments; encourages the efforts of the human rights treaty bodies to monitor more effectively the human rights of women; decides to consider this question on a priority basis at its 59th session under the item entitled "Human rights question".
