Takes note with appreciation of the report on the achievement of the International Year of Peace; recognizes the important contribution of the International Year of Peace and supports the efforts made by the international community in carrying out activities designed to strengthen the UN as an instrument of peace; commends the initiative taken by the Secretary-General to place greater emphasis each year on the observance, on the 3rd Tuesday of Sept., of the International Day of Peace; emphasizes the importance of education for peace, especially at the primary and secondary levels; urges all those interested in the promotion and attainment of the goals of the International Year of Peace to support the programmes of the Peace Studies Unit of the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs of the Secretariat, making voluntary contributions to the Trust Fund for the Promotion of Peace; urges Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and the world community to persevere in these efforts, developing initiatives conducive to the objectives of the Year; requests the Secretary-General to invite Member States and interested organizations to inform the Secretariat of their activities and initiatives in pursuit of those ends and to submit to the General Assembly at its 46th session a report on the development of relevant programmes and activities.
