Security Council resolution 1592 (2005) [on extension of the mandate of the UN Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC)]

Decides to extend the mandate of MONUC until 1 Oct. 2005; reaffirms its demand that all parties cooperate fully with the operations of MONUC's and that they ensure the safety of all UN personnel; emphasizing that MONUC is authorized to use all necessary means to carry out its tasks and deter any attempt at the use of force, stresses that MONUC may use cordon and search tactics to prevent attacks; demands that the Governments of Uganda and Rwanda, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo put a stop to the use of their territories in support of violations of the arms embargo or activities of armed groups in the region; requests the Secretary-General to ensure compliance with the zero tolerance policy to prevent misconduct and further the requests the Secretary-General to keep the Council regularly informed of the measures implemented and their effectiveness; urges troop-contributing countries to take appropriate action to prevent sexual exploitation and abuse by their military personnel in MONUC; decides to remain actively seized of the matter.
