Promotion and protection of human rights : human rights defenders : report of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hina Jilani

Section 1 of the report describes the Special Representative's activities during 2004, which included raising cases of concern with Governments, country visits to Angola and Turkey as well as a follow-up visit to Colombia, and collaboration with UN bodies, regional institutions and non-governmental organizations; Section 2 analyzes trends and patterns in the cases of concern taken up by the Special Representative with States over the year; Section 3 analyzes the situation of human rights defenders in 13 countries concerning which the highest number of communications were sent by the Special Representative during 2004; Section 4 examines the situation and role of human rights defenders in the context of international peace and security.
