Statement / by the President of the Security Council

Statement [made on behalf of the Security Council, at the 4994th meeting, 22 June 2004, in connection with the Council's consideration of the item entitled "The situation concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo"]

Reiterates its grave concern at the continued violence and threats to the peace and transition process and condemns any involvement by outside forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; urges all parties to remain fully committed to the peace process and to respect the Government of National Unity and Transition; warns all parties against any attempt in belligerent actions or violations of the embargo imposed by resolution 1493 (2003); urges the Governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda to respond to MONUC's request to establish a joint verification mechanism for their common security; urges the Governments of Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi not to provide any support to armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; condemns the deaths of innocent civilians and human rights abuses in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and calls for such incidents to be fully investigated.
