Summary
General Humberto Ortega (Nicaragua, 1947 – ) is a Latin American revolutionary and former Nicaraguan military leader. He and his brother, Daniel Ortega , Nicaraguan President (1984-1990; 2007- ), founded the Tercerista tendency of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1975. In 1977 he helped to create the urban insurrection strategy that ignited civil war in Nicaragua. During Sandinista rule, General Ortega oversaw the building of the Sandinista Popular Army (EPS). Following the victory of Violeta Chamorro and the Unión Nacional Oppositora (UNO) in the 1990 presidential elections, General Ortega maintained control of the military. Conducted on 25 March 1998, after his retirement, this interview centered on the Nicaraguan relations with the United States in the 1980s, the conflict between the Sandinistas and the Contras, and the role the United Nations played in the ceasefire which led to the cessation of hostilities.
