United Nations public information policies and activities

Requests the Department of Public Information to pay particular attention to such major issues as human rights, aids epidemic, combating terrorism, the needs of the African continent and the issues addressed in the UN Millennium Declaration; requests the Secretary-General to continue to exert all efforts to ensure that publications, information services and web site information contain comprehensive, objective and equitable information; requests the Secretary-General to report to the Committee on Information on the progress made on the systematic evaluation of DPI; supports the efforts of DPI to focus its promotional campaigns on the major issues identified by the Secretary-General; stresses the importance of enhancing public information capacity of DPI in the field of peacekeeping operations and requests the Secretary-General to continue to report to the Committee on Information on the role of DPI in UN peacekeeping; stresses the central role of the News and Media Division in the timely delivery of accurate, objective and balanced news and information; requests the Secretary-General to pay full attention to the parity of the six official languages in radio broadcasting; reiterates its appreciation for the efforts of DPI in creating a high-quality, user friendly and cost-effective web site and reaffirms the need to achieve full parity of all six official languages on the UN web site; requests the Secretary-General to report on the work of the Steering Committee on the Modernization and Integrated Management of the UN Libraries to the 26th sess. of the Committee on Information; urges the Dag Hammarskjold Library to strengthen depository libraries by providing regional training and other assistance.
