Summary
Former President Alfredo Cristiani (El Salvador, 1947 – ) was elected President of El Salvador in 1989 representing the conservative political party Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA). His presidential term was marked by considerable challenges, as he entered the presidency in the midst of Civil War between the Government and a coalition of four leftist groups and one communist group, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). Mr. Cristiani represented the El Salvadoran Government when he met with representatives of these guerrilla groups in 16 January 1992 which ended the 12-year war. Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar has been noted in saying that the peace process could not have succeeded in El Salvador without Cristiani. Conducted after his Presidential term, on 25 July 1997, Mr. Cristiani, in this interview, discussed his role in ending the Civil War in his country and the peace negotiations that followed.
