Considered as a leading authority on Islamic subjects, modern history and Middle Eastern politics, Majid Khadduri (Iraq, 1909 – 2007) was the founder of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies Middle East Studies program. He worked for the Iraqi Ministry of Education before he became a member of the first Iraqi delegation to the United Nations in 1946 and helped to draft the Organization's charter. In this interview, conducted on 20 March 1997, Mr. Khadduri shares his insight on the creation of the United Nations Charter, Iraq's membership to the Organization, and clarifies the roles of the Secretary-General, the Security Council and the General Assembly.
