Summary
One of Australia's longest serving foreign ministers and best known internationally for his roles in developing the United Nations peace plan for Cambodia, Gareth Evans (Australia, 1944 – ) served as minister to several other portfolios before he served as Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1988 to 1996. An expert in conflict resolution, Mr. Evans also held several important positions within the United Nations Secretariat. He was member of the Secretary-General's High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change in 2004, and of the Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction in 2006. Currently, he is a member of the Secretary‑General's Advisory Committee on the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities. In the interview conducted on 10 December 1997, while he was still serving as Australia's Foreign Minister, Mr. Evans discusses Australia's role in implementing a peace plan in Cambodia and the peace negotiations that began in Paris in 1989.
