Submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1497 (2003) of 1 Aug. 2003. Provides a brief historical background and update of the situation in Liberia. Includes sections on: recent political and military developments; assessment mission; security and human rights situation; humanitarian situation, recovery and development issues; disarmament, demobilization and reintegration; and proposed UN mission in Liberia. Also outlines the recommendations of the Secretary-General on the role the UN can play to facilitate the effective implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed on 18 Aug. 2003 by the Liberian parties, including through the deployment of a UN peacekeeping operation.
