Summary
Strongly condemns the atrocious and deliberate attack on the UN Office in Baghdad on 19 Aug. 2003, which killed 15 UN staff members, the largest number ever in one incident, and 7 others, and wounded more than 100 persons; pays special tribute to Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, and his colleagues who perished in this senseless tragedy; urgently calls for international cooperation to find and bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this vicious act; calls for intensified international cooperation to prevent and eradicate such acts of terrorism and to hold accountable all those who participate in such acts; reaffirms the determination of UN to assist the Iraqi people to build peace and justice in their country and to determine their own political future by themselves, and welcomes in this regard the determination of the Organization to continue its operation in Iraq to fulfil its mandate in the service of the Iraqi people and not to be intimidated by such attacks.
