      abstract = {Considered as one of the world's leading experts in  peace-building, Dr. Alejandro Bendaña (Nicaragua, [1950])  served as the Nicaraguan Permanent Representative to the  United Nations, Director General of Multilateral Affairs  and Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry during  Sandinista rule in Nicaragua, from 1979 to 1990.  Thereafter, Dr. Bendaña served as a consultant for the  United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural  Organization (UNESCO) Culture of Peace Programme and for  ex-combatant reintegration in Central America, Colombia and  South Africa.  Dr. Bendaña founded the Centro de Estudios  Internacionales in Managua, Nicaragua in 1990, and was  serving as its Director when this interview was conducted  on 29 July 1997. Here, he discussed the importance  Nicaraguan elections of 1990 in regard to the overall  stabilization of Central America. Dr. Bendaña evaluated  the roles that the Contadora Group, the United States and  the United Nations played in those elections.},
