Sir Anthony Parsons (United Kingdom, 1922 – 1996) represented Britain during negotiations at the United Nations throughout the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina. After the Falklands War ended, Sir Anthony retired from diplomatic service and became a leading adviser on foreign affairs to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Sir Parsons had a long diplomatic career, serving at embassies in Ankara, Amman, Cairo, Khartoum and Bahrain. From 1969 to 1971, he served as counsellor in the United Nations Mission in New York. Sir Anthony was Ambassador to Iran in 1974 and was Britain's Permanent Representative in 1979 to the United Nations. Retired at the time of this interview, conducted on 19 April 1991, Sir Anthony discussed the role he played in the Falklands War, from the frustrations of failed negotiations with Argentina to cease-fire efforts. He also discussed Secretary-General Pérez de Cuéllar's election and evaluated his handling of the crisis.
