Summary
Mr. Joseph J. Sisco (United States, 1919 – 2004) was appointed the United States Representative to the United Nations Security Council in 1967. At this time he also served as United States Representative to the Fifth Special Session of the General Assembly on the Middle East as well as Political Advisor for the United States Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Sisco then became the chief United States mediator for the Middle East in 1968. Prior to his time at the United Nations, Mr. Sisco worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1950 and the Department of State in 1951. From 1951 to 1965, he served as a foreign affairs officer, specializing in issues involving the United Nations and other international organizations. In 1965, Mr. Sisco was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs. This interview was conducted on 18 October 1990, during Mr. Sisco's retirement. Here, he discussed the United States involvement in the election of Secretary-General U Thant, his relationship with U Thant and the 1967 Middle East War.
