Summary
Proclaims the ten-year period beginning on 1 Jan. 2002 the UN Literacy Decade; reaffirms the Dakar Framework for Action adopted at the World Education Forum; appeals to all Governments to redouble their efforts achieve their own goals of education for all by developing national plans and to reinforce political will and develop more inclusive policy-making environments; also appeals to all Governments and to economic and financial organizations to lend greater financial and material support to the efforts to increase literacy and achieve the goals of education for all; decides that Unesco should take a coordinating role in stimulating and catalysing the activities at the international level within the framework of the Decade; requests the Secretary-General, in cooperation with the Director-General of Unesco, to seek and take into account comments and proposals from Governments and relevant international organizations in order to develop a well targeted draft plan of action for the Decade to be submitted to the General Assembly at its 57th session.
