Resúmen
Decides that the main objective of the international arrangement on forests is to promote the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitments to this end; decides that its principal functions will be to facilitate and promote proposals for action, generate financial resources, mobilize technical and scientific resources, provide a forum for policy development, enhance regional and international cooperation, monitor and assess progress at all levels and strengthen political commitment for sustainable forest development; decides to establish, as a subsidiary body of ECOSOC, an intergovermental body called the UN Forum on Forests which will consider, within 5 years, the parameters of a mandate for developing a legal framework on all types of forests; states the Forum's working modalities, organizational structure and programme of work; requests the Secretary-General to establish a compact secretariat at UN Headquarters in New York comprised of highly qualified staff; recommends that funding for the Forum and the Secretariat should be provided from the UN regular budget and calls upon donor Governments and financial institutions to make voluntary contributions to a trust fund to be established; decides to review the effectiveness of the international arrangement of forests in 5 years.
