Follow-up to the International Year of Older Persons : 2nd World Assembly on Ageing

Decides to convene the 2nd World Assembly on Ageing in Spain in April 2002, to be devoted to the overall review of the outcome of the 1st World Assembly on Ageing, as well as to the adoption of a revised plan of action and a long-term strategy on ageing; invites all Member States, members of specialized agencies, intergovermental and non-governmental organizations to participate at a high level in the 2nd World Assembly; decides that the Commission for Social Development shall serve as the preparatory committee for the 2nd World Assembly; requests the Secretary-General to elicit the views of Governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations on progress in and obstacles to the implementation of the International Plan of Action on Ageing, as well as priority issues to be addressed in a revised plan of action and a long term strategy on ageing; invites the Secretary-General to establish a technical committee, with adequate geographical balance, to assist him in the formulation of proposals during the preparatory process; encourages Member States to provide voluntary contributions to the UN Trust Fund for Ageing in support of the preparatory process; requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its 55th session on the implementation of the present resolution.
