Summary
Article 29 of the United Nations Charter authorizes the Security Council to establish "such subsidiary organs as it deems necessary for the performance of its functions." Pursuant to this paragraph, the Security Council has established a wide range of subsidiary bodies to support its work, including sanctions committees, working groups and other committees that seek to promote international norms in the areas of counter-terrorism, prevention of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and protection of children in armed conflict. These subsidiary organs are under the direct authority of the Security Council and are composed of Security Council members.
