Summary
Human rights are universal legal guarantees that protect individuals and groups against actions and omissions that interfere with fundamental freedoms, entitlements and human dignity. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) feature a strong equity focus and a rights-based approach, putting non-discrimination and equality at the heart of sustainable development. Several of the SDG targets are relevant for a rights-based response to HIV, including SDG 3 (“Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”), SDG 5 (“Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”), SDG 10 (“Reduce inequality within and among countries”) and SDG 16 (“Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”).
