Poor farmers and rural dwellers have long been plagued by a lack of access to credit. The role of microcredit in rennoving such constraints and in pronnoting agricultural and rural development in general is discussed as a selected issue in the world review. Another issue to be highlighted is the effect of armed conflicts and civil strife on agriculture and food security. The review assesses the losses in agricultural output associated with warfare and presents strategies for rehabilitation. An important feature of this year's issue is the special chapter: "World food and agriculture: lessons from the past 50 years", which gives an overview of developments that have taken place in world agriculture and food security over the past half-century.
