Former federation of 9 Malay States, set up in 1946 as Union of Malaya, re-organized and estab. in 1948 as Federation of Malaya. It achieved independence with membership in the Commonwealth in 1957 and became part of the Federation of Malaysia on 16 Sept. 1963

On 16 Sept. 1963, the 'Federation of Malaya' changed its name to 'Malaysia'
