Follow-up to the UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) and the future role of the Commission on Human Settlements

Reaffirms that the Commission on Human Settlements should have a central role in monitoring the implementation of the Habitat Agenda; calls upon all the relevant UN organizations and specialized agencies to identify specific actions that they will undertake towards the implementation of the Habitat Agenda; calls upon the funds and programmes of the UN system and the regional commissions to support fully the effective implementation of the Habitat Agenda; invites the Bretton Woods institutions to consider how they might be actively involved in the implementation of and follow-up to the UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II); decides that such organizations should be encouraged to participate in the work of the Commission; reaffirms the existing mandate of the Commission on Human Settlements; reaffirms in particular the responsibility of the Commission to give overall policy guidance to and to supervise the operations of the UN Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat); decides that the Commission shall assist ECOSOC in monitoring, reviewing and assessing the progress made in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda; urges the Commission to adopt a multi-year work programme culminating in an overall review and appraisal of the Habitat Agenda in the year 2001; decides that the work of the Commission shall be primarily focused on the relevant provisions of the Habitat Agenda; also decides that the agenda of the Commission on Human Settlements shall include substantive items derived from the UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II); requests that all UN documentation be kept concise with a focus on relevant issues; recognizes that the methods of work of the Commission should be revitalized; decides to consider organizing interactive high-level segments on key policy; requests the Executive Director of the UN Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) to submit a report on the activities of regional offices.
