Statement [on the item entitled "The situation concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo"]
Statement made on behalf of the Security Council, at the 4015th meeting, 24 June 1999, in connection with the Council's consideration of the item entitled "The situation in concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo" / President, Security Council

Reaffirms its commitment to preserving the national unity and political independence of the Decmocratic Republic of the Congo and other States in the region; supports regional mediation process by the President of Zambia on behalf of the Southern African Development in cooperation with the OAU and with the support from the UN; calls on all parties immediately to sign a ceasefire agreement; reaffirms its readiness to consider the active involvement of the UN, in coordination with OAU, to assist in the implementation of an effective ceasefire; and stresses the need for national reconciliation and democratization of all States of the Great Lakes region.
