This publication, supersedes the Principles and Recommendations published in 1973. It includes developments in technology and computing, that can greatly enhance civil registration. It is also an important reference book for teaching and training on vital statistics and civil registration systems in population research institutes, training centers and universities. Companion to this book are series of Handbooks on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems issued by the United Nations over the last several years.
