Summary
Reaffirms the legal and direct responsibility of the UN over Namibia; affirms that all outstanding issues relevant to the implementation of its resolution 435 (1978) have now been resolved as stated in the Secretary-General's reports contained in documents S/18767 of 31 Mar. 1987 and S/19234 of 27 Oct. 1987; welcomes the expressed readiness of the SWAPO to sign and observe a ceasefire agreement with South Africa, in order to pave the way for the implementation of Security Council resolution 435 (1978); decides to authorize the Secretary-General to proceed to arrange a ceasefire between South Africa and SWAPO in order to undertake the administrative and other practical steps necessary for the emplacement of the UN Transition Assistance Group.
