Security Council resolution 582 (1986) [calling for cease-fire and exchange of prisoners between Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran]

Deplores the initial acts which gave rise to the conflict; déplore also the escalation of the conflict, especially territorial incursions, the bombing of purely civilian areas, attacks on neutral shipping or civilian aircraft, the violation of international humanitarian law and other laws of armed conflict and, in particular, the use of chemical weapons; calls upon both parties to observe an immediate ceasefire; urges a comprehensive exchange of prisoners of war to be completed within a short period of time; calls upon both parties to submit immediately all aspects of the conflict to mediation or any other means of peaceful settlement of disputes; requests the Secretary-General to continue his efforts to assist the 2 countries to implement the present resolution.
